A Day in My Life as a Destination Wedding Photographer in Europe

People often ask what a wedding day looks like from my perspective as a destination wedding photographer in Europe; what it’s like behind the camera, and how I approach documenting so many moving parts while keeping things calm and intentional. Every wedding is different, but here’s a little glimpse into what a typical day feels like for me.

Hello from the road!

For many weddings, there is some traveled involved so I usually arrive near the location the day before. Sometimes I will do some location scouting if I have never been there. Many destination weddings also have a welcome dinner that I will photograph for 1-2 hours. Then in the evening I have a relaxing dinner and go over my check list and timeline for the following morning.

Wedding days usually start early. I’ll grab a coffee, check my gear, and review the timeline one last time before heading out. There’s always a mix of calm and anticipation; no matter how many weddings I’ve photographed, I still feel it.

When I arrive, the day is already taking shape. The planner’s team is setting up, flowers are arriving, someone’s ironing a dress. It’s always interesting to watch everything slowly come together. I like to start quietly, taking in the light, the space, and the atmosphere before I begin shooting.

During the getting ready portion of the day I prefer to stay a bit back and let everyone enjoy the morning. I capture the details, and then go back and forth between the couple capturing some candid moments.

Often we will also do a "first look" with the couple before the ceremony. This is great because they can have some alone time before the day starts.

The ceremony is usually the heartbeat of the day. Every couple reacts differently. Some laugh their way through it, others are emotional. My job is to read the energy and capture it honestly, without making it feel staged.

After the ceremony we do some family portraits, and I love to bring out my drone during the apero to capture the scene.

The afternoon and evening flow quickly. Portraits, dinner, toasts, dancing; every part of the day has its own pace and light. I’m always paying attention to how that changes: when the sun drops, when candles are lit, when people finally relax into the night.

I usually stay around 30-60 minutes into the party to make sure I capture the energy of the evening. Then I pack up all my gear and say goodnight to the couple.

I always leave each wedding feeling grateful, not just for the beauty of the day, but for the trust couples place in me to tell their story. Every celebration is unique, and it’s that human connection that makes this work so meaningful.
